How does fish oil impact the brain

What is fish oil?

You may have heard a lot about fish oil these days. It is cited as a way to help people deal with a variety of aliments, but what is it exactly?

Put simply, fish oil is an oil that is derived from the tissues of oily fish. These tissues all contain fatty acids of the omega-3 variety. The interesting thing is that fish do not produce omega-3 fatty acids. They gain it in their tissues by eating prey fish and microalgae. The higher up you go in the food chain, the more fatty acids you are going to get.

According to many reports, omega-3 fatty acids contain anti-oxidants that can help prevent cancer. In addition omega-3 fatty acids have been found to prevent heart disease, clinical depression, anxiety and more.

Fish are often called brain food and as a result, fish oil is good for the brain. Why? That is what we are going to look into through this article.

Rhode Island Study

In a study done at the Rhode Island Hospital, it was found that there were positive associations between the use of fish oil and the cognitive functioning of the brain. There was also a distinct difference between the people who used fish oil supplements and those who did not.

The results were reported at the International Conference on Alzheimer’s Disease, and included 819 individuals. Of the 819 individuals, 117 reported the regular use of fish oil supplements before they began the study and after the study. Researchers looked at the cognitive functioning of the brain and brain atrophy in the patients in those who did not take the supplements and compared it with those who had taken the supplements.

Through the study, it was found that patients who took the supplement had better cognitive functioning. The study showed that there was a clear association between fish oil supplements and brain volume.

University of Liverpool

Researchers at the University of Liverpool conducted a study in which they found that those who have a diet rich in omega-3, which includes fish oil, can prevent the negative effects by pushing the brain to control feeding, learning and the memory.

The team was part of the Institute for Aging and Chronic Disease at the university and they looked at research from around the world to see whether omega-3s play a role in helping people lose weight.

While it was found that omega-3 didn’t have a direct impact on the weight loss process, 185 research papers indicated that omega-3 fatty acids, like from fish oils, had a significant impact on the brain by reducing high fats that cause damage on the brain.

In the study, researcher Dr. Lucy Pickavance said, “body weight is influenced by many factors, and some of the most important of these are the nutrients we consume.”

The changes in the brain caused by the consumption of omega-3 fatty acids included generating new nerve cells. In the research, it was found that not only could omega-3 prevent the effects of damage to the brain by high fats, but could even reverse the effects.

High-fat diet hormones are typically secreted from the body into the circulation after one eats. These high-fat diet hormones typically protect neurons and help in the stimulation of their growth but are prevented from passing to the brain. Inflammatory molecules that stimulate nerve growth are also impacted. Fish oils may not have a direct impact on weight loss but they stop the detrimental effects that high-fat diets trigger in the brain.

Alzheimer's Society

According to the Alzheimer’s Society, Wernicke-Korsakoff’s Syndrome, similar to dementia and caused by alcohol consumption, impacts one out of eight people with alcoholism. Studies have shown that it is most common in people between the age of 45 and 65 who have a long history of abusing alcohol. Research published in the BMJ discovered that by consuming 1-2 portions of oily fish or fish oils per week helped to reduce the effects of the condition. It also found that consuming that amount of fish oil per week reduced the risk of breast cancer by 14 per cent.

A study by the Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine that looked at the brain cells of rats who had been exposed to alcohol found that consuming fish oils would reduce the risk of neuronal degeneration.

The results found that brains exposed to fish oil and alcohol had 95 per cent less neuroinflammation and neuronal death in their brain cells compared to cells that had been exposed to only alcohol.

Conclusions

Fish oil is highly beneficial to the human body and countless studies have shown this. Through the ingesting of fish oil, you will be able to improve both your mind and body but you have to be careful not to overdue it. The larger fish have more fish oil in them but they are also consuming the toxins of the fish below them. As a result, larger fish have more toxins in their body. By eating those fish, you can get the same toxins in your body.

The best course of action is to get your fish oil from fish oil supplements. These are concentrated to do the most good for you and your body. Your mind will improve, your body will improve and all because you have taken fish oil supplements.

Remember, fish are brain food.
