How Fish oil affect to heart diseases

Every day, millions of people are taking fish oil supplements as a way to help keep their bodies healthy. The reason for this is the many health benefits that come from fish oil, thanks to the omega-3 fatty acids that are found within the oil.

The fish itself doesn't actually produce omega-3 fatty acids, but instead gains the fatty acids by eating micro-algae and prey fish that have accumulated omega-3 fatty acids in their bodies.

Interestingly enough, while fish oil is used heavily by people to be healthy, 50 per cent of all the fish oil in the world is used in aquaculture feed to feed to farm salmon.

Where do you get it?

When you want to get fish oil, there are two choices. You can take supplements or you can get it from the fish themselves. The higher up the food chain you go, the more omega-3 fatty acids you are going to get from fish oil because the predatory fish will be eating more fish than fish lower on the food chain. However, one problem with eating larger predatory fish is that they not only accumulate more fatty-acids, but they also accumulate more toxic substances in the process. As a result, it is recommended by the Food and Drug Administration that you limit your consumption of predatory fish because of toxic contaminants such as mercury.

Why consume it?

There are many health benefits for fish oil, most of which have been confirmed through sevearl tests. The American Heart Association has even recommended that you consume one gram of fish oil every single day. The US National Institutes of Health also states that anyone suffering from hypertriglyceridemia, secondary cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure should take supplements of fish oil.

Omega-3 fatty acids are well-known for their ability to reduce pain and swelling in individuals. Fatty acids also prevent blood from clotting, which helps people with heart conditions. This is why fish oil is used so heavily with conditions that impact the heart and blood. Fish oil has also been known to lower blood pressure and cholesterol.

Fish are often recognized as brain food, and the eating of fish can help with depression and ADHD.

Due to its impact on the blood, women could take fish oil to prevent painful menstruation, breast pain and miscarriages. Fish oil is also used for asthma, movement disorders, dyslexia, obesity, kidney disease and diabetes.

After heart transplant surgery, fish oil is often used to prevent high blood pressure and kidney damage. It also reduces the chances that the body will reject the new heart.

The Evidence

What is the evidence related to fish oil being effective for these conditions?

Researchers have found that fish oil is effective in treating high triglycerides, which can lead to heart disease and diabetes. To treat these diseases, it is necessary to get triglycerides to a lower level and this can be done with fish oil. Researchers at Biochimica et Biophysica Acta discovered that triglyceride levels could be lowered by 20 to 50 per cent by fish oil supplements.

Evidence from studies has found that eating fish, or taking fish supplements, can help people with healthy hearts, keep healthy hearts. Those with heart disease can lower their risk of dying from heart disease as well.

In one study at Center for Advancing Health, it was found that the moderate consumption of fish, or taking of fish oil supplements, reduced the risk of stroke by 27 per cent. However, and this is important to remember, consuming more than 46 grams of fish per day can increase stroke risk and even double it.

Fish oil research appears to show that there is a decrease on the re-blocking of an artery after surgery by 26 per cent in total.

Side Effects

There are of course side effects with fish oil. Fish oil generally is very safe to consume, but an overconsumption can lead to problems. It is best that doses of three grams or less per day are taken because taking more than that can keep blood from clotting and that will increase the chance of bleeding. High doses of fish oil can also reduce the immune system's ability to fight infections.

Other side effects include bad breath, heartburn, loose stools, nosebleeds and rashes. If you take fish oil with meals, you will reduce the chances of this.

If you have an allergy to fish, do not consume fish oil. As well, if you have liver disease, do not consume fish oil as it may increase the risk of bleeding. People with bi-polar disorder may find that their symptoms increase with fish oil, and those with diabetes can find that fish oil in high doses reduces their ability to control their blood sugar properly.

Since high doses of fish oil reduce the strength of the immune system, individuals with HIV or AIDS should refrain from consuming it.
